Book & Bound Scanning Service description

At Calgary Archives, we can virtually scan any type of book, magazine, newsletter, or newspaper. We convert fragile archival bound material with meticulous professional handling to maintain the integrity of your material. Some of the features for bound material scanning include the following:

  • High resolution scanning up to 600 dpi
  • We use special purpose book cradles to avoid harming book spines
  • Capabilities include small and large books, newspapers, and magazines
  • Our clean-up processes remove the curvature of book pages so the text will not be warped
  • We can scan bound books up to 26″ wide when opened and 23″ tall.

All images scanned by Calgary Archives are processed for Despeckling, Deskewing, Proper Rotation, and file size optimization.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

Optical Character Recognition is the process of automatic recognition and interpretation of text from different types of documents including scanned paper documents, newspapers, magazines or PDF files into editable and searchable data. Calgary Archives offers a number of solutions for extracting text from different types of documents.

Definitions

Despeckle : An image processing (clean-up) operation that removes random specks, called flyspecks or pepper, from an image to improve legibility, OCR accuracy and to improve compression.

Deskew : To straighten out a crooked image. Improves OCR accuracy and reduces image file size.
